Knauf Insulation’s unfaced Glass Mineral Wool solutions with E-Technology® are the first Mineral Wool products in rolls and slabs to be officially certified in Europe by the DECLARE label marking a major breakthrough for building well-being and health.

To be certified by DECLARE, products are independently analysed in forensic detail to ensure they do not contain any harmful or unhealthy chemical ingredients included on the International Living Future Institute’s Red List.

Benoît Thiry, our Market Manager for Residential applications, said: “DECLARE certification is an important third-party recognised tool that publicly and transparently shows our Glass Mineral Wool products with E-Technology® contain no added formaldehyde, no fire-retardant additives or any anti-fungal intentionally added chemicals.

Our natural ingredients

“In addition, the DECLARE label underlines the natural composition of our solutions to show they are made from Red List-free materials.”

Our glass mineral wool insulation products are composed of approximately 90% glass mineral wool, which is made of up to 80% recycled content (most of which is recycled glass cullet) and other mineral virgin raw materials such as sand and limestone. The remaining 10% comprises a bio-based binder and small quantities of additives that aid technical performance.

Jean-Pierre Pigeolet, our Buildings Sustainability Manager, said: “Just as customers increasingly want to know the ingredients of the food they consume, there is growing demand for understanding the ingredients of building products. People want certainty that there are no unhealthy chemicals being installed particularly homes, schools, offices and hospitals. DECLARE provides this certainty.

Free of unhealthy ingredients

“DECLARE certification is an important public record that discloses every ingredient of our unfaced Glass Mineral Wool with E-Technology® down to every 0.01% of its composition. The certification is also an important reminder that up to 80% of these products are made from recycled glass.”

The certification also comes at a time when Green Building Rating Systems such as WELL, Living Building Challenge and LEED schemes are increasingly rewarding DECLARE-certified products with points for contributing to well-being.

Jean-Pierre Pigeolet said: “DECLARE and the Red List has grown in popularity because they are based on an auditing system that is straightforward to understand and transparent in its findings. This provides the integrity customers need when they are looking for healthy building products.”

Indoor air quality benefits

Prior to the pandemic, people were spending 90% of their time indoors, that figure is likely to been higher in the past year as the interior health of buildings has become a public priority. Our Glass Mineral Wool with E-Technology® is certified to the highest Eurofins Gold Standard for indoor air quality.

The DECLARE certification of our Glass Mineral Wool with E-Technology® follows the same certification of our SUPAFIL blowing wool and Urbanscape Rock Mineral Wool for green roofs. The Urbanscape solution was the first building material in Europe to be certified by DECLARE in 2019, while in North America most of our solutions have been DECLARE certified for many years.
